The Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest fauna reserves in the world. It is located in the south of Tanzania. The reserve was named after Englishman Sir Frederick Selous, a famous big game hunter and early conservationist. He died at Beho Beho in this territory in 1917 while fighting against the Germans during World War I. Scottish explorer and cartographer Keith Johnston also died at Beho Beho in 1879 while leading an RSGS expedition to the Great Lakes of Africa with Joseph Thomson.
Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Selous Game Reserve
We will pick you up from your place in Dar es Salaam and depart for Selous Game Reserve. The journey takes 6 hours so we will stop for lunch at Kibiti, a local restaurant. Late in the afternoon, you’ll enjoy a boat safari along the mighty Rufiji River. This will get you to close contact with hippos, crocodiles and fantastic birdlife, as they make their way to the river to drink. Boats may approach elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffes, waterbuck and other game, a few meters from the river banks. Crocodiles glide into the water as your boat approaches and hippos appear in frightening proximity, grunting and blowing steam.
Day 2: Game Drive at Selous
You will enjoy a full day in the Selous Game Reserve. You’ll use a 4 wheel drive vehicle to explore the reserve. This allows you to have good photographic opportunities and explore different sections of the vast park. The Selous Game Reserve is the largest in Africa, covering 54,600 sq km. Selous is also famous for its elephants. Visitors will commonly see lions, wild dogs, buffaloes, bushbuck, impalas, elands, baboons, zebras and greater kudus. Originally, it was set aside as a hunting area as animals are abundant but shyer than the Northern parks.
Day 3: Walking Safari of Selous Game Reserve to Dar es Salaam
In the morning, you’ll enjoy a wilderness walking safari before breakfast. A walking safari will give you a particularly intimate feel for the African wilds. You’ll get a good chance to see giraffes, zebras, elephants, and good birding. An armed ranger will guide you during the 2-hour walking safari. Afterward, you’ll meet your driver at the reserve gate and drive to Dar es salaam. You will be arriving late in the afternoon and you’ll be dropped off at your place.
